Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni
On the border with Suriname, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is French Guiana’s second-largest town. The former Transportation Camp, where convicts arrived until 1946, is explored with a passionate guide. The river banks, pirogues and multicultural markets make for a wholly new setting, ideal for a weekend for two far from the big-city noise.
Kaw Marshes and wild nature
East of Cayenne, the Kaw Marshes, one of France’s largest wetlands, shelter caimans, scarlet ibis and giant water lilies. A pirogue trip at dusk, to hear the forest wake into the night, makes for a memorable date. The floating bungalows on offer let you stretch the evening right at water level.
Awala-Yalimapo and traditions
At the mouth of the Maroni, Awala-Yalimapo gathers the Kali’na communities in a beach village where leatherback turtles nest. Traditional pirogues, crafts and preserved songs tell of a living culture. On Lyad, people from French Guiana share their special places; it is up to you to find someone to travel upriver and build a sincere connection with.
